Yael

"Israel is a pawn in a much larger chess match..." -- gives me chills, something I think we all know, but don't like to think about.

Will the next American president have any obligation to keep with the agreement in these letters?

J. Lichty

The problem, as we saw after June 2002 (hell, let's go back to the Balfour Declaration), is that once diplo-speak sets in, Israel's rights which may be seemingly strong on paper are constantly watered down by "well meaning" third parties, or sadly, in this instance by the same President that actually made strong demands of the Palestinians in June 2004 and replaced it with the bizarre Road Map.

That "guarantee" is not worth the price of the paper it was written on, and will be misinterpreted, reinterpreted, or ignored to suit the realpolitik purposes du jour, which always seem to be at the expense of Israel's security.
