According to the Associated Press:
Palestinian policemen stood by and watched, admitting they were outnumbered by the crowds and had little motivation to stop them.

This is a preview of how they will treat any Jewish (and possibly non-Jewish) holy sites that might come under their control. Good evidence for not allowing them to control 1 inch of Jersalem.
